January Empties

Nivea Fragrance Free Facial Cleansing Wipes (repurchased/would repurchase) – These are my favourite facial wipes, and I will continue to purchase them over and over again. I’ve reviewed these previously, but I want to take this opportunity to reiterate that these are a dry wipe. I’m a super weirdo and I prefer dry wipes but I know many people don’t, so if you’re not down with dry wipes please don’t purchase these. How many times can I say dry wipes in a paragraph? Dry. Wipes. Dry wipes.

Fresh Sugar Lip Balm (would repurchase) – I l-o-v-e this lip balm. It feels luxurious and moisturising on my lips, and as an added benefit has a delicious fresh lemony scent. I haven’t repurchased this yet, but I will definitely be buying another tube once I make my way through my extensive and overwhelming existing lip balm stash.

Pantene 3 Minute Miracle (repurchased) – I have a mini stash of these, so I’m trying to make my way through them all gradually. I love the way these make my hair feel, but I can’t use them too often because they’re quite thick/heavy and I find that they tend to weigh my hair down a little bit. I’ve been using these for years and I still don’t look like Liv Tyler, so I don’t know what’s going on.

Paula’s Choice Hydralight Face Cleanser (repurchased) – This is my holy grail facial cleanser. I can’t speak highly enough about the Paula’s Choice skin care range. I’ve not had one major breakout (hormonal, or otherwise), since starting to use these products. This is a nice lightweight gel cleanser, and I use it both morning and night.

Origins Zero Oil Pore Purifying Toner – I picked up my half-empty bottle of this toner to finish it up, and after using the Paula’s Choice toners for a few consecutive months, this felt akin to using corner-store brown paper bag moonshine on my face. Or so I imagine.

Maybelline Loose Powder in Light (repurchased) – This has been my favourite loose powder for quite a while now. The shade ‘light’ is fair enough for me to wear comfortably, but not so white that it adds a ghostly glow to my face. I will acquire that naturally by never setting foot in direct sunlight, thank you very much.

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser (repurchased) – I used to use this cleanser on my face a few years back, but I’ve since replaced it with something else (see Paula’s choice above), so I now use this as a gentle alternative to body cleanser/shower gel.

Thoughts of the week…

01) Beyonce performing at the Grammy Awards = perfection.

02) I’ve joined the majority of the civilized world and have started watching ‘Girls’. I love it, but I hate every single character on the show, which I’m led to believe is the general response when first watching it. I’m hooked though, and managed to get through the entire first season in a week.

03) I happened upon the Original Source Vanilla Milk and Raspberry shower gel at Woolworths last week and OH MY GOD GUYS. Do you know how tempted I am to open the bottle and drink it? It smells AMAZING. Like strawberry milk.

04) The Mindy Project half-season hiatus was TOO MUCH FOR ME TO BEAR.

05) Paolo Nutini is releasing an album this year. I can’t wait.

06) Sarah posted a link to this website on twitter during the week, and it is a dangerous place to be if you’re in the mood to shop.

07) Paula’s Choice are having an Australia Day celebration 50% off sale, but be quick because it ends tomorrow!

08) 50 Essential Mystery Novels That Everyone Should Read

09) I am obsessed with this song. And this song.

10) You all need to be reading this book. It’s funny, and sad, and touching, and just plain sweet. I’m loving it. It’s my favourite book of the year so far.

50 Book Challenge (part 1)

A Tap On The Window by Linwood Barclay (3/10) – The first book I read this year was a bit of a flop. I had high hopes for this, the plot sounded promising and I was in the mood for a good thriller, but this book just didn’t deliver. The story seemed to drag on for a long time without anything interesting happening, I found it hard to follow the characters, and I didn’t care enough about the main character to get involved in his back story.

The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides (8/10) – With this book, Jeffrey Eugenides has officially cemented his place on my list of all-time favourite authors. This book was not my favourite of his, (fyi my personal ranking of Mr Eugenides books is as follows: 1. Middlesex, 2. The Virgin Suicides, & 3. this one), but still, I loved it. The characters in this book were so vivid that I felt like they were jumping off the page at me.

Dark Places by Gillian Flynn (8/10) – I loved this book. This is my favourite book by Gillian Flynn so far, I just couldn’t seem to put it down. I It was a real page turner, and I raced through it because I was desperate to find out what happened at the end. A great mystery/thriller and a very easy read.

How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff (2/10) – Ugh, this book. Firstly, I may have read Flowers In The Attic at least 25 times when I was a teenager, but that doesn’t mean I’m down with pointless incest popping up in books. Especially when there is no character or relationship development whatsoever. You’re just supposed to roll with it? No. Also, I really did not like the way this book was written. I’m not a big fan of stream of consciousness writing, and I found it hard to pull anything from the story. Thankfully this book was super short and I zipped through it in two days.

Product Review: Max Factor False Lash Effect Mascara

It takes a lot for me to stray from a makeup product that I have an established ‘holy grail’ for. In this case, mascara. I’ve been loyal to Lancome’s Hypnose mascara for a few years now, and it always feels like a huge waste of money to try anything new because nothing else ever seems to compare. This mascara was sent to me to try and I was in the mood for something different so I decided to give it a go. I’m so glad that I branched out and tried something new because I love this. My biggest problem with mascara is that nearly every product I’ve tried transfers onto my eyelids as soon as I apply it. This does not. Nor does it clump on my lashes, smudge, or flake throughout the day. It has a dry formula (which I personally like, because I feel that it helps build length without getting too gloopy), and a large brush that separates the lashes easily. The Max Factor False Lash Effect Mascara retails for $24.95 AUD and is available for purchase from Priceline (note: product was sent for consideration for review).

Thoughts of the week…

01) The last book I read was Dark Places by Gillian Flynn and I highly recommend it if you like a good murder mystery. This is my favourite out of the three books Gillian has released so far. I loved it and I couldn’t put it down.

02) GAME OF THRONES. GAME OF THRONES. GAME OF THRONES.

03) I need to make time to go and see The Book Thief ASAP. Has anyone seen it yet? I’ve heard mixed reviews so far, and I’d love to hear your thoughts!

04) Once again, Amy & Tina hosting the Golden Globes was absolute perfection. Also, Amy Poehler finally won a Golden Globe. It’s about time! WOO AMY! WOO PARKS!

05) I’m kind of obsessed with Jen Loves Kev at the moment. Obsessed.

06) I’m also newly obsessed with EssieButton’s vlogs. I’ve watched three today already.

07) Someone asked me what I’m planning to do for my 30th birthday this year. Hahahahahahahahahahahaha. Oh God. WHEN DID THAT HAPPEN.

08) 36 White People That Need To Be Stopped

09) Because I’ve only moved half of my things into the new place (and my new bathroom is a LOT smaller than my old one), I’ve consciously had to minimise the amount of beauty products that I use. I don’t hate it.

10) There are so many shows that I can’t wait to start watching… Helix and True Detective are at the top of my list, I just need to catch up on a few shows that I haven’t finished watching yet… There are not enough hours in the day for me to watch all the great television that is available at the moment.
